Puerto Rico in February: The Driest Month, the Whales, and the Weekend That Costs the Most

The quick answer

February is the driest month of the year in San Juan: NOAA 1991-2020 normals give a high of 84 F, a low of 72 F and just 2.6 inches of rain across the month, the lowest total of the year and drier even than January. It is also the heart of peak season, and in 2027 Valentine's Day (Sunday, February 14) runs straight into Presidents' Day (Monday, February 15), making the middle of the month the most crowded and expensive window of the winter. The payoffs are real: the best weather odds on the calendar, the peak of humpback-whale season off Rincon, and Carnaval de Ponce in the week before Ash Wednesday (February 10 in 2027).

On paper, February looks like the perfect month for a Puerto Rico trip, and mostly it is. It is the driest, clearest, most reliably sunny month of the year, the humpback whales are at their peak off the west coast, and it is one of the few winter stretches when a US traveler can build a long weekend around a holiday without touching a passport. The catch is not the weather. It is the crowd and the price, and in 2027 the calendar concentrates both into a single mid-month window. Here is the honest version, with the actual numbers.

This is a companion to our guide to January, the month right before it, and our month-by-month guide to when to visit. January and February are close cousins, both peak dry season, but they are not the same trip, and the differences are worth knowing before you set your dates.

What February weather actually does

All figures below are NOAA 1991-2020 climate normals from the station at San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport.

February in San Juan: a normal high of 84 F, a normal low of 72 F, and just 2.6 inches of rain across the whole month.

That 2.6 inches is the headline. It is the lowest monthly rainfall total of the year, which makes February statistically the driest and most dependable month to visit. Days are warm without being hot, nights are mild, and the showers that do come tend to be brief. If your main worry about a Caribbean trip is losing days to rain, February gives you the best odds on the calendar.

The sea is at its coolest in February, sitting around the high 70s Fahrenheit. That is still perfectly swimmable for almost everyone, a touch off the bath-warm feel of late summer but comfortable for snorkeling and long days on the sand.

As in every month, the south runs drier and brighter still. Puerto Rico's central mountains cast a rain shadow over the southern third of the island, so Ponce, Guanica and the Cabo Rojo coast see even less rain than San Juan. In the driest month of the year that matters less than it does in a showery month like November, but it is still true if you want the very best odds of cloudless beach afternoons.

How February differs from January

If February is peak dry season, so is January, so why does the month matter? Three real differences.

February is drier. January is a fine month, but February's 2.6 inches of rain edges out January's roughly 4 inches, and February is the single driest month of the year. For a weather-first trip, it has the slight edge.

The holiday season is over. Puerto Rico's Christmas runs long, all the way through Three Kings Day on January 6 and the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastian in late January. By February all of that has wound down. Local life is back to its normal rhythm, so the island feels less like one continuous party and more like an ordinary, if busy, peak-season month. Whether that is a gain or a loss depends on what you came for.

The whales are at their peak. Humpbacks pass the west coast from roughly December through March, and February is the most reliable month to see them, as our whale watching guide explains. January is good; February is better.

The catch: peak season, and two holidays that stack

February sits in the heart of the December to April peak season, so flights, hotels and rental cars run high and the popular tours book out well ahead. That is the baseline for the whole month. In 2027 the calendar then stacks two mainland holidays on top of it.

Valentine's Day falls on Sunday, February 14, 2027, and Presidents' Day lands the very next day, Monday, February 15. That turns the middle weekend of the month into a long weekend for a large slice of the US mainland, right on top of the island's most romantic date on the calendar. If you are picturing a quiet beach, the days around February 13 to 15 are the opposite: the busiest and priciest window of the entire winter in San Juan and the resort towns.

There are two honest ways to play this. If that long weekend is the only time you can travel, book early, treat the peak rates as fixed and lock the tours you care about before they sell out; our vacation cost breakdown and budget guide cover where the real money goes. If your dates are flexible, the first week and the last week of February are noticeably calmer and cheaper than the middle, with weather every bit as good. Shifting a trip a week in either direction off Presidents' weekend is the single easiest saving this month offers.

What is on: Carnaval de Ponce, coffee season, and the whales

February is not a quiet month culturally. It simply trades January's street festivals for its own.

Carnaval de Ponce. The island's biggest and oldest carnival takes over Ponce in the week leading up to Ash Wednesday, which in 2027 falls on February 10, so the celebration runs in roughly the first week of the month. It is famous for the vejigantes, masked figures in bright horned papier-mache masks that are a Ponce tradition in their own right. Exact dates shift year to year, so confirm them with the Ponce municipality before you build a trip around it. Our Ponce guide covers the city the rest of the year.

Coffee-harvest season in the mountains. February is the tail end of the coffee harvest, and the central-mountain coffee towns mark it with festivals. The Fiesta del Acabe del Cafe in Maricao is traditionally held on Presidents' Day weekend, and Yauco's coffee festival runs later in the month into early March. Dates move, so check before you drive up, but the drive itself, through the cool green highlands, is worth it in the dry season. See our coffee country guide for the route.

The whales. More on these below, but if you have one February priority, this might be it.

What the water is doing in February

Whales. Humpbacks migrate past the west coast from roughly December through March to breed and calve, and February is the peak. Rincon is the center of it, and on a clear day you can sometimes spot a spout from the Punta Higuera lighthouse point without leaving land. Our whale watching guide covers the boat trips and the shore vantage points.

Surf and swell. The same winter that brings the whales brings the swell. The north and west coasts can run powerful surf and strong rip currents from roughly November through March, which is excellent for experienced surfers and a genuine hazard for everyone else. A February beach day on those coasts can mean rough water, so read the conditions and swim where lifeguards are posted. Our Rincon surf for beginners guide covers reading a west-coast break, and the calmer south and east coasts are the safer bet for easy swimming and snorkeling.

Sargassum, not an issue. The seaweed that can pile up on some beaches runs roughly April through October, as our sargassum guide lays out, so February is one of the cleanest months on that front. It is one more reason the island photographs so well this time of year.

Where we would base in February

For a first February trip we would still start in San Juan: the forts, the food and the easy airport access make it the natural anchor, and our where to stay in San Juan guide breaks down the neighborhoods. Because February is peak season, book the city stay early, and earlier still if your dates touch Presidents' weekend.

From there, February rewards a west-coast leg more than most months. A few nights around Rincon puts you on the whales and the winter surf scene, and it pairs naturally with the bright, dry south coast around Ponce and Cabo Rojo if Carnaval or the coffee country is on your list. Our where to stay in Puerto Rico guide covers the wider choice, and our best beaches guide helps you match the coast to the conditions, which in a swelly month matters.

Couples take note: February is the island's honeymoon-and-anniversary high point for a reason, and our honeymoon guide covers what actually delivers and what to skip. When the dates are set, the booking hub and all our activities are where to lock the pieces that sell out, and over that mid-month weekend especially, they do sell out.
