The Story Behind the Playbook
Puerto Rico Playbook comes from the same family of independent, editorial travel guides behind our sibling sites in the Caribbean. We started this one because the gap was obvious: the official destination site cannot be honest about trade-offs, and most independent guides recycle the same generic ten-day itinerary without digging into what actually changes trip by trip, like a bio bay's moon-phase window or which ferry days are worth booking around.
We write as a team, not a single named guide, and we check the things that go stale: park fees, ferry schedules, hurricane-season timing, whether a listed tour is still active. Where we have not verified something ourselves, we say so rather than dress it up as firsthand knowledge.
Puerto Rico Playbook is the guide we wish existed for this island: honest, specific, and built from primary sources rather than a template reused across a dozen destinations. No pay-to-play listings, and every recommendation comes with the one honest trade-off a booking page will not tell you.

No passport wedge, told straight
Puerto Rico is US soil: no passport, no currency exchange, no border line for US travelers. We say that plainly, and we are just as plain about the real trade-offs, like the island's power grid.

We verify prices and ratings against live data
Tour prices and review scores on this site come from current Viator listings, not from memory. When we cannot verify a rating, we show none at all rather than invent one.
We source logistics from official channels
Ferry schedules, park entrance fees, and moving-target rules like El Yunque's reservation status are cross-checked against government and operator sources, dated so you know exactly when we last confirmed them.
We remove what goes stale
A tour that goes inactive on Viator, a restaurant that closes, a price that moves: when we catch it on a routine check, the page gets corrected or the listing comes down, not left up for traffic.
No pay-to-play, ever
No restaurant, hotel, or tour operator can pay to appear here. We earn affiliate commission on some bookings (disclosed below), but commission rates never decide what we recommend.
How We Verify Content
The specific standards every fact on this site has to meet before and after it is published.
Prices
We do not publish prices we have not verified on the operator's booking page or via direct contact. Prices are marked with the month they were checked. When a price changes, we update the page before sharing the link again.
Restaurants and businesses
We do not list a restaurant or business as open unless it is confirmed via the operator's own site, a direct call, or a current listing on Google or a comparable primary source. Permanently closed businesses are removed, not archived.
Tour operators
Tour operators linked from this site are checked against their current Viator listing, rating, and review count before an article is published or substantially updated, and re-checked when we revisit a page.
What we have not verified
Where a detail could not be confirmed against a primary source, we say so and either mark it clearly or leave it out, rather than presenting an estimate as fact.
When we last checked
Every page shows an “updated” date. That date changes only when we have re-verified at least one key fact, not when we make a grammar or formatting edit. The most frequently updated pages are the ones with volatile data: entry requirements, taxi rates, hotel prices, and tour costs.
How we vet tours
We do not accept free tours in exchange for coverage, and operators cannot pay for a “worth it” verdict. Every listed tour is checked against its live rating, review count, and cancellation policy on Viator before it earns a place here. Viator affiliate links are disclosed; they are booking facilitators, not editorial endorsements in exchange for fees.
