Laguna Grande, reached by kayak through a mangrove channel from near Las Croabas, is one of Puerto Rico's bioluminescent bays, where microorganisms in the water light up when disturbed, turning every paddle stroke into a streak of blue-green glow. Guides lead the two-hour paddle out through the mangroves and into the open lagoon after dark, when the bioluminescence is visible. How bright the glow appears depends heavily on the moon phase, since a full moon washes out the effect, so tours are scheduled around the lunar calendar.
Pro tip
Book around a new moon if the glow itself is the priority; near a full moon the ambient moonlight washes out much of the bioluminescent effect.
