When should I go?

The dry season runs December through April, the best weather and the biggest crowds. Hurricane season is June through November, and yes, some of the cheapest flights land right in the middle of it. Our honest tip: April, May, and November are the value window, decent weather, fewer crowds, and noticeably lower hotel and flight prices, without the deepest hurricane-season risk of July through October. (That tip is from living here, not from a brochure.)

Condado / Isla Verde

First-timers, groups, walkable resort strip. Closest beach to the airport.

Old San Juan

History and food scene. Cobblestone streets, walk everywhere, no car needed.

Rincon

West-coast surf town. Slower pace, sunset every night, a car helps here.

Do I actually need a car?

Honest answer: depends which side you are on. Staying in San Juan metro and doing tours? Rideshares and taxis cover you. Rent a car for the days you want El Yunque, Fajardo's bio bay, or a swing through Rincon, a car beats paying per tour if you are exploring solo. Vieques and Culebra are reached by ferry or small plane, not a bridge, so renting there is a separate, on-island decision. Our move: book a car for the days you actually leave San Juan, not the whole week.

Entry & practical stuff

  • No passport needed: Puerto Rico is a US territory. A REAL ID-compliant driver's license is enough, same as flying to any US state. USD is the only currency, no exchange needed.
  • Safety: Puerto Rico is a U.S. State Dept Level 1 (lowest), the same rating as any US state.
  • Power: outages happen more often here than mainland travelers are used to. Most hotels and resorts run backup generators; ask your property about theirs if it matters to you.

A quick note on insurance: a good policy covers the cancellations, medical costs, and lost bags you hope you never need.

Yes. Puerto Rico is rated U.S. State Department Level 1, the lowest, safest tier, the same rating as any US state, since travel here is domestic US travel for advisory purposes. Normal travel common sense is all you need.
