Sun Bay is Vieques' signature public beach: a mile of white sand curving between Punta Negra and Cayo de Tierra, which act as natural windbreaks and keep the water calm and swimmable most of the year. It is managed by Puerto Rico's Department of Natural Resources, so facilities are a step up from Vieques' wilder beaches, and it is a short walk from Esperanza's row of restaurants and bars, making it easy to turn a beach day into a full day. The island's descendants of Spanish colonial-era horses wander freely across the sand here, as they do across most of Vieques.
