Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico

Flamenco Beach

Culebra

Flamenco Beach is the reason most visitors make the trip out to Culebra in the first place. The mile-long horseshoe bay is protected by a reef roughly a quarter-mile offshore that acts as a natural breakwater, keeping the water calm across most conditions. A rusted 1940s Sherman tank, left over from when the Navy used the island for exercises, still sits half-buried in the sand near one end and has become an unofficial landmark. Getting here takes intention: a ferry from Ceiba or a short flight to Culebra, then a taxi or the short walk from town. That effort keeps the crowd smaller than a beach this good would otherwise draw, though cruise-adjacent day-trip boats can bring a midday rush in high season.

Best time

Midweek and outside the winter holiday stretch, when the ferry-and-flight crowd thins out; the bay itself looks good most of the day.

Swim safety

Calm most of the year thanks to the offshore reef. Red flags go up occasionally in winter when north swells push in, so check conditions before swimming out.

Parking

On-site lot fills by mid-morning in high season; arrive early or plan to walk in from town.

Shade

No real shade, bring an umbrella or rashguard.
