The West

Rincon

Puerto Rico's surf town, facing west for the island's best sunsets.

Rincon is the west coast's surf town, built around a string of named breaks, Domes, Sandy Beach, and others, that draw winter groundswells roughly November through April. That same swell season makes winter a tougher window for beginners; the smaller, calmer conditions outside peak swell season generally suit first-time surfers better.

Beyond surf, the town runs a weekly Art Walk through its central square on Thursday nights, and the Punta Higuera lighthouse area is a well-known sunset and, in winter, whale-watching spot, since Rincon faces west across the Mona Passage.

Aguadilla, a short drive north, shares much of the same coastline and shows up frequently in Rincon-area tour listings for snorkeling and horseback riding, so this page and its bookable tours cover both towns as the one loosely connected stretch of coast travelers actually visit together.

Before you go

The practical stuff

Do you need a car

Yes, generally. Rincon and Aguadilla are on the opposite side of the island from San Juan, roughly a two to three hour drive, and there's no dense public transit network out here the way there is downtown.

Best season to learn to surf

Winter's groundswells (roughly November through April) draw more experienced surfers and bigger conditions; smaller summer windswell is generally more forgiving for beginners.

Art Walk

A weekly Thursday night event in Rincon's town square, worth checking current timing locally since schedules shift.

Rincon questions, answered straight

Is Rincon good for beginner surfers?

It can be, but timing matters. Rincon's winter groundswell (roughly November through April) is what the town is famous for, and it draws bigger, more experienced-surfer conditions. Beginners generally have an easier time in the smaller summer windswell, at a beginner-friendlier break like Sandy Beach rather than Domes.

When is the Rincon Art Walk?

A weekly Thursday night event in the town square; confirm current timing locally since schedules can shift.

Best time to visit Rincon?

Winter (roughly December through April) brings the swell Rincon is known for and sits inside the island's dry season; summer brings calmer water, better suited to beginners and casual swimming.

How far is Rincon from San Juan?

Roughly a two to three hour drive across the island, making Rincon more of a standalone west-coast base than a San Juan day trip.
