Golden sand and high-rise hotels along Isla Verde Beach in Carolina

San Juan and the Metro Area

Isla Verde

San Juan's resort beach strip, and the closest beach to the airport.

Isla Verde is the beach-hotel strip in Carolina, technically its own municipality but functionally part of the San Juan metro, and the closest stretch of sand to Luis Munoz Marin International Airport. That makes it a natural first or last stop on a trip: land, drop bags, and be in the water within the hour, or spend a final beach day here before an evening flight.

The beach itself splits into a few distinct sections, from the surf break at Pine Grove to the government-run Balneario de Carolina, with lifeguards and public parking, at the east end. Offshore, the Isla Verde Reef Marine Reserve shelters coral and is a known spot for sea turtle sightings.

Most of the island's most-booked tours, especially El Yunque day trips and bio bay combos, offer hotel pickup from Isla Verde alongside Condado and Old San Juan, so a stay here doesn't cut off access to the rest of the island.

The practical stuff

Getting around

Walkable within the hotel strip. A rideshare or taxi covers Old San Juan or Condado; a car or a booked tour with pickup is the practical way to reach El Yunque or Fajardo.

Airport distance

Isla Verde is the closest beach neighborhood to SJU, generally a short taxi or rideshare ride, useful for travelers with an early flight or a late arrival.

Do you need a car

Not for a beach-and-hotel stay in Isla Verde itself. Day trips outside the metro area work either with a rental car or a tour that includes pickup.

Isla Verde questions, answered straight

Is Isla Verde or Condado better to stay in?

Isla Verde puts a hotel closest to the airport and a wide public beach with lifeguards. Condado is a five to ten minute walk from Old San Juan's city walls, trading a little airport convenience for walkability into the historic district.

Is Isla Verde Beach good for swimming?

Most of the strip is calm and swimmable. Pine Grove, at one end, has real surf and current and suits experienced swimmers and surfers better than a casual swim.

How far is Isla Verde from the airport?

It's the closest beach neighborhood to Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, generally a short rideshare or taxi ride.

Can you snorkel at Isla Verde?

Yes, the Isla Verde Reef Marine Reserve sits offshore and is a known area for coral and sea turtle sightings.
