Playa Sucia (La Playuela) in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico

Playa Sucia (La Playuela)

Cabo Rojo

La Playuela, more commonly called Playa Sucia, sits at the base of the Faro Los Morrillos lighthouse on the Cabo Rojo peninsula, Puerto Rico's southwestern-most point. The beach forms a tombolo, a sand spit connecting to a small rocky islet, with limestone cliffs rising on either side. It is undeveloped and reached by a dirt road past the lighthouse, which keeps it well off the resort-strip circuit even though it is well documented among Puerto Rico travel guides. The nearby Cabo Rojo salt flats, with their pink-tinted evaporation pools, make a natural add-on to the same drive. This is a place to build an afternoon around a sunset rather than a swim.

Best time

Late afternoon into sunset, when the cliff light is at its best.

Swim safety

Currents can run strong near the tombolo and the rocky point. Better for wading and photos than serious swimming.

Parking

Unpaved lot near the lighthouse trailhead; a standard car is usually fine in dry weather, the road gets rougher after rain.

Shade

No real shade, bring an umbrella or rashguard.
